Lieutenant-Governor of South Australia since 1973. One of Australia's most distinguished diplomats, he has been ambassador to Italy, Ethiopia, the Netherlands and Belgium and High Commissioner to India and Canada. He was professor of International Relations at the Australian National University from 1949 to 1952. Between 1971 and 1977 he was a member of the University of Adelaide Council and is the author of eight books including Australian Ambassador published in 1971.
