Friedrich Gerstäcker was a German author and traveler. Restless as a young man, he traveled across America for six years before returning home as a minor celebrity, his mother having published his travel diaries. He continued to write and travel, basing many of his novels in foreign lands, which contributed to their popularity in Germany.
