Hungerford, Charles Frederick Algernon Portal, Viscount Portal of (b. May 21, 1893, Hungerford, England-d. April 22, 1971), Marshal of the Royal Air Force, was the British Chief of the Air Staff during most of the Second World War. He enlisted as a private in 1914 but was quickly commissioned and, in 1915, transferred to the Royal Flying Corps and served as commander of No. 16 Squadron and No. 24 Wing in World War I. After the War, he took command of No. 7 Squadron RAF, and during World War II, he was an advocate of strategic area bombing against German industrial areas and of night bombing. He was one of the senior commanders present at the Yalta Conference and retired in 1945 at war's end.
