Jack Lindsay was born in Melbourne, Australia. In his native land, he became known for his poetry and his translations from classic Greek and Latin poetry. He went to England in the 1920s and founded the Fanfrolico Press there. Afterwards, he wrote many books in the area of cultural studies including "A Short History of Culture" (1939) and historical fiction such as "Caesar is Dead". In addition, he wrote biographies of writers Dickens, Blake, Bunyan, and Meredith, plus artists Turner, Cezanne, Hogarth, and Gainsborough. He was a close friend of both Dylan Thomas, and Edith Sitwell. He also socialized (as well as collaborated) with Robert Graves.
