William Weed Kaufmann was born November 10, 1918, in New York, New York. He has taught at Yale University, Princeton University, and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, where he is currently a Professor of Political Science. In addition, Kaufmann was a member of the Department of the Air Force Science Advisory Board from 1961-1963, and has worked as a consultant for the Department of Defense since 1961. He is the author of several books, including "The McNamara Strategy" (1964).
