Wegener, Alfred, 1880-1930
Variant namesAlfred Wegener was a German geophysicist and meteorologist who worked on the thermodynamics of the atmosphere and originated the theory of continental drift (the Wegener hypothesis), a theory which has won scientific respectability in recent years. He served on and led scientific expeditions to Greenland in 1906-1908, 1912-1917, 1929 and 1930. On the last of these he lost his life.
