Clement R. Attlee was born in Putney, England, and educated at Oxford. His early experiences as an educator and lawyer led to a long political career, and he held many important offices before becoming Labour Party leader in 1935. He served in the War Cabinet during World War II, became deputy Prime Minister in 1942, and succeeded Winston Churchill as Prime Minister in 1945. He was known for his opposition to fascism, and as Prime Minister helped India achieve independence. After retiring from politics he wrote several books, including the autobiographical As It Happened.
