Founded in 1912 by Dr. Archibald E. Baker, Sr. of Charleston and Dr. Lawrence Craig of Dillon, South Carolina, Baker-Craig Sanitorium, as it was then known, opened on Thanksgiving Day 1912. Designed by Charleston Architect J.D. Newcomer, it was built at a cost of between one hundred thousand and one hundred and fifty thousand dollars. In 1917, Dr. Baker assumed full control of the hospital and amended the charter so the hospital could operate as a charitable institution. In later years, when the family-run hospital ran into financial difficulty, a group of ten Charleston doctors took control of the operations of the hospital rather than allow it to close. In 1963, the trustees purchased the hospital from the Baker family and renamed it Baker Memorial Hospital. In 1981 when the hospital moved to a new building in North Charleston, the old hospital was converted into a condominium complex called Baker House. It is located at the corner of Beaufain and Ashley Avenue on Colonial Lake.
