David Bogue was the son of David Bogue (1750-1825) of Gosport College. The younger Bogue was born in 1794, and he died in 1824. He had studied at Glasgow University.

1771-1777 taught in various schools with the Reverend William Smith and provided assistance with his ministerial duties; 1777- minister, Independent or Congregational chapel, Gosport, Hampshire; 1789 developed the Gosport Academy; 1794 founder of the London Missionary Society; 1799 founder of the Religious Tract Society; 1800 tutor of missionaries, the Gosport Academy; 1804 founder, the British and Foreign Bible Society.
