Author of South Carolina, born in Milledgeville, Ga.; during her life, Lumpkin resisted revealing her date of birth, resulting in the uncertainty evident in her established name heading; in a 1977 interview, Lumpkin claimed that she was born in 1895; died 1980; published some books under pseudonym Ann DuPre; friend and one-time roommate of Esther Shemitz, wife of Whittaker Chambers.
