Charles Atherton was the son of George Atherton, the 7th president of Pennsylvania State College. He graduated from Pennsylvania State College in 1892 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry. He played both football and baseball while in college and traveled with sports teams after graduation. In 1906 he became the organist at the Jan Hus Settlement Church in New York City. Charles took charge of all the church and Sunday School music, as well as the athletics in the neighborhood house adjoining the church. He held this position for twenty-five years and retired in 1930. Charles Atherton died in 1935 in Vienna, Austria.
