Eva M. Noles is a nurse, an educator, a volunteer, an author, and a community leader. She was the first African American in Buffalo to graduate from the three year nursing program at E.J. Meyers Memorial Hospital Training School of Nurses in 1941. In 1965 and 1967 respectively, she earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing and a Master of Arts degree in Education from the University at Buffalo. She started her career working as the first black staff nurse at Roswell Park Cancer Institute where later she became an instructor of nursing and assistant director of nursing. In 1970 she was named Director of Nursing, the first African American Director at Roswell. After retiring from Roswell in 1974, Noles joined the team at the Medical Personnel Pool for the next seven years training nurses' aides and helping educate more than one hundred other health care providers as family planning nurse practitioners. Eva M. Noles was also an active volunteer and won numerous awards for her dedicated service to the American Red Cross. She is the author of several publications including Black history: a different approach: a compilation -- Buffalo's Blacks: talking proud -- Six decades of nursing at Roswell Park, 1914-1974.
