Caldwell served as prosecuting attorney in Van Buren County, represented the county in the 8th Iowa General Assembly and fought in the Civil War, achieving the rank of colonel. In 1864 he resigned from the army to accept the position of judge of the United States District Court of Arkansas, a position he held until 1890 when he was appointed judge of the Eighth Circuit Court. In 1903 he retired to private life.
