Mary Wilkins Freeman was a popular writer of short stories, novels, and poetry in late 19th century. Her greatest successes were regional New England character studies, and, although her stature declined in the changing literary landscape of early 20th century America, her reevaluation by feminist scholars in the 1970s has earned her renewed appreciation and recognition for her body of work.
