Born in Antwerpen 1885, died in Greng am Murtensee, Switzerland 1953; philosopher, socialist theoretician and politician; contributor to the Leipziger Volkszeitung 1905, cofounder of the Internationale Verbindung sozialistischer Jugendorganisationen in 1907, and of the Belgian Centre for Workers Education 1910; volunteered in the First World War; went to Russia in 1917; taught social psychology in Frankfurt am Main 1929-1933; professor at the university of Brussels; in his D̀e Socialistische Idee' 1933, developed the p̀lansocialism'; his P̀lan van de Arbeid' was partly put into effect by the Belgian government in 1935; minister of several departments 1935-1940; chairman of the Belgische Werklieden Partij (BWP)/Parti Ouvrier Belge (POB) in 1939; disbanded the BWP after the German invasion in 1940 and accepted the Ǹew Order'; created the Unie voor Hand- en Geestesarbeiders; went to France and later to Switzerland; convicted in 1946 in absentia to 20 years imprisonment for collaboration.
