Prominent Dakota Territory surveyor, politician, journalist and historian.

Born in Milan, Ohio, educated at the Huron Institute and Western Reserve College, and trained as a civil engineer and surveyor, Armstrong came to the Yankton area from Minnesota in 1859. He undertook numerous surveying contracts for the territorial government; erected the first capitol building; served as territorial legislator, congressman, auditor, treasurer, and adjutant general; and edited the Dakota Union and established the Dakota Herald. An authority on the early history of Dakota and author of several books on the subject, Armstrong was secretary of the Dakota Historical Society for ten years and a charter member of its predecessor organizations, the Old Settler's Historical Association and the Dakota Historical and Library Association. In 1878, Armstrong returned to St. James, Minn., where he died in 1905.
