Jacob Gates (1811-1892) was president of the fourth quorum of the Seventies in 1844. He served many missions for the LDS church and was also politically active.

Jacob Gates was born 9 March 1811 in St. Johnsberry, Caledonia, Vermont to Lucy Plumley and Thomas Gates. He married Mary Minerva Snow 16 March 1833 and joined the LDS church in June on that same year. Jacob and his wife followed the church to Missouri, Illinois, and finally Utah. He was made a president of the fourth quorum of the Seventies in 1844. He served several missions throughout his life to the states and Europe. He lived in St. George, Washington County, Utah, for several years and served on the county court and in the Utah Territory House of Representatives representing Washington and Kane counties. Jacob died 14 April 1892 in Provo, Utah.
