George Armstrong Custer was a famous cavalry officer during the Civil War and the Indian wars of the 1860s and 1870s. Elizabeth Bacon Custer, his wife, was the author of several works about Army life on the plains. After the death of her husband, she dedicated her life to defending his honor.

Born in Bedford, New Hampshire, December 10, 1813; taught school; came to Detroit, 1833; engaged in mercantile business; was mayor of Detroit, 1851. Prominent in organizing the Republican party, 1854. Republican member of the U.S. Senate, 1857-1875; and again in 1879; Secretary of the Interior, 1875-1877; chairman of the Republican National Executive Committee, 1868 and 1876; died, while on a speaker tour, in Chicago, Ill., November 1, 1879.
