Jane Conly was born in 1948 in Virginia, daughter of two writers. Her father, Robert Leslie, was the author of the Newbery Award book, Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of NIMH. Jane assisted her father with his final novel, Z for Zachariah, and then created her first books based on the popular rats of NIMH. Her 1993 novel for young adults, Crazy Lady, was named a Newbery Honor Book.
