Biography

Frederick of Mömpelgard (d. 1608) became the Duke of Württemberg in 1593. Robert, Earl of Essex (1586-1601) was a favorite of Elizabeth I, Queen of England, and occupied a variety of military posts. However, after his failure as Lord Lieutenant and his defiance of the Queen, he was tried for treason and executed in 1601.

Essex's Azores expedition was delayed by weather and sickness and did not disembark from England until August 17, 1597.
