Charles Godfrey Leland was born on Aug. 15, 1824 in Philadelphia, Pa. He attended private schools in the Philadelphia area and graduated from Princeton University in 1845. Following graduation he toured Europe and enrolled in the University of Heidelberg. He returned to the United States in the early 1850's and in 1853 began working as a journalist. From 1853 to 1857 he contributed a number of articles to the Illustrated News, the Philadelphia Evening Bulletin, and Vanity Fair. In 1857, he became editor of Graham's Magazine and began publishing his series of German-English poems "Hans Breitmann's Barty." During the American Civil War, he founded and published the Continental Monthly to further the Union cause and promote abolitionism. In 1869 he completed his first book "Hans Breitmann's Ballads." Before his death in 1903, Leland wrote over fifty books and successfully introduced industrial and craft arts into American schools.
