Helmut Karl Buechner (1918-1975) was born in Scotia, New York, and received his B.A. from New York State College of Forestry, Syracuse University, in 1941. He subsequently received an M.A. from Texas A & M College in 1943, and a Ph.D. from Oklahoma A & M College in 1949. From 1948 to 1965 Buechner taught zoology and botany at Washington State College (now University). He joined the Smithsonian in 1965 as its first Director of the Office of Ecology. From 1969 to 1972, Buechner served as Senior Ecologist for the Office of Environmental Sciences and from 1972 to 1975, for the National Zoological Park.
