John E. Boos was born in Albany, New York, in 1879. He worked in Albany as a clerk and as a library assistant but is best remembered for his compilations of personal reminiscences about the life of Abraham Lincoln. Around 1910, he began soliciting firsthand recollections from those who had personally met or seen Lincoln, and by the 1940s he had amassed a large collection of written reflections and records from personal interviews and letters. After exhausting the resources of Lincoln's contemporaries, he shifted his collecting focus to memorabilia related to other United States presidents, a hobby he maintained until his death on January 12, 1974. Of the Boos material related to Lincoln, the Clements Library has approximately 145 items; other significant collections are at the Library of Congress and the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library.
