Cowan, 1919-1974, a physicist and educator, took his doctorate at Washington University in St. Louis in 1949. From 1949 to 1957 he was a physicist at the Los Alamos Scientific Laboratory, where he became a group leader in the nuclear weapons test division. He joined the physics faculty at the Catholic University of American (CUA) as an ordinary professor in 1958. A co-discoverer of the neutrino in 1956, he was a poineer in the technique of particle detection used in elementary particle physics, the monitoring of low levels of radioactivity, and the medical uses of radioactive isotopes. Internationally recognized for his scientific attainments, he was a recipient of many honors. He was a fellow of he American Physical Society, a Guggenheim Fellow, and honorary Sc.D. of the University of Dallas and the University of Missouri. He served as a consultant to the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission, and the U.S. Naval Ordnance Laboratory and the Smithsonian Institution.
