Jane Grey Swisshelm was born in Pittsburgh in 1815. She worked as a teacher until her marriage to James Swisshelm. They built a home outside of Wilkinsburg and called it Swissvale. She had a talent for writing and worked for abolition and woomen's rights. She was Pittsburgh's first newspaperwoman as owner and writer of the Pittsburgh Saturday Visitor. She died in 1884.
