Louis F. Henderson was born near Boston in 1853. He studied languages and botany at Cornell University and moved west after graduation, living in California and then in Oregon. He was a professor of botany at the University of Idaho and headed the Department of Botany at the University of Oregon. Henderson traveled extensively, collecting botanical specimens. He remained active in the field of botany into his 80s and died in 1942 at the age of 88.

Louis Forniquet Henderson (1853-1942) was born in 1853 in Roxbury, Massachusetts, on September 17, 1853. He is considered to be an important early botanist, with at least 17 Northwest plant species named in his honor. Throughout his accomplished and long career, Henderson collected botanical specimens in Oregon, Idaho, and Washington states, among others. Upon his graduation from Cornell, Henderson moved west to Oregon where he taught in Portland and then to Washington where he served as a state botanist and forester. In 1893, Henderson became the first Professor of Botany at University of Idaho where founded the IU herbarium and worked until his retirement in 1911. In 1924 at the age of 70, Henderson joined the University of Oregon as curator of Oregon plants. Henderson retired from University of Oregon in 1939. He died on June 14, 1942.
