Surveyor and explorer, accompanied Ernest Giles on an expedition to Central Australia, 1873, and again in 1875 on a journey from Beltana, S.A. to Perth. In 1878-1879 he made attempts to open up the Nullarbor Plain for pastoral purposes. He joined N.S.W. Dept. of Lands as a surveyor in 1891.

Tietkens was an explorer who accompanied Ernest Giles on journeys to the west of the Darling River in 1864, to Central Australia in 1873, and from Beltana, South Australia to Perth in 1875. In 1889, he led an expedition that explored country near Lake Amadeus, Northern Territory.
