Edwin D. Mead and Lucia Ames Mead were both leading pacifists, writers, and social reformers, and were involved in the international peace movement. Edwin Mead directed the work of the World Peace Foundation; participated in many international peace congresses; was an American delegate to the International Peace Bureau; helped found the School Peace League; was a prominent member of the American Peace League. Lucia Ames Mead was a leading member of many feminist and pacifist organizations; was a member of the Woman's Peace Party; a delegate to the founding conference of the Women's International League for Peace and Freedom in 1919; a vice-president on the board of the National Council for Prevention of War; an officer of the National Council of Women of the United States, and was a member of many U.S. feminist associations.
