The great prose epic La Gran Conquista de Ultramar is considered to be one of the greatest Spanish works of the thirteenth century. The work of copying and supervising textual studies of the four forms of La Gran Conquista was begun at the University of Chicago in the 1930s under the direction of George Tyler Northup, Professor of Spanish Literature. Northup was born in Wisconsin in 1874. He received his B.A. from Williams College in 1897 and his Ph. D. from University of Chicago. Taught at Williams College (1903-1905), Princeton University (1905-1912), University of Toronto (1912-1917), and University of Chicago (1917-1964).
