Edmund Taite Silk was born in New Haven, Connecticut, on August 16, 1901. He received his B.A. degree in 1924, his M.A. in 1927, and Ph.D. in 1930, all from Yale University. Silk joined the Yale faculty in 1927 as a member of the classics department. He was curator of classical and medieval manuscripts at the Yale University Library from 1944 to 1959. From 1959 until his retirement in 1970, he served as library advisor in this area. Silk died in New Haven, Connecticut, on April 12, 1981.
