John Henry Nicholson was born on 12 June 1838 at Lyme Regis, Dorset, England. He was the son of John Nicholson and Anne, nee Waring. His father John Nicholson and his uncle William Nicholson had befriended Ludwig Leichhardt during their student days in Germany. William Nicholson sponsored Leichhardt financially before his emigration to Australia. In 1859 John Henry Nicholson settled in Queensland. He worked as a teacher and a writer, writing also under the pseudonyms of Todberry Gilcobs and Salathiel Doles. He died on 30 June 1923.
