One of eight children of Joseph T. and Elizabeth O. Saunders, Eloise Saunders was born on a farm near Dunn's Corner in Westerly, R.I.; she attended school through the eighth grade, and lived her entire life in or near Westerly. Beginning in the 1930s Saunders worked as a mother's helper and as a housekeeper. An amateur naturalist, she was active in the Rhode Island Audubon Society and with the 4-H Club. In 1986 she was misdiagnosed with polymyalgia; she died of bone cancer in 1988.
