Born in Milford, Conn., Jan. 18, 1740. After serving in French and Indian wars, he became a fur trader in Detroit. In 1778 he established the first post in the Athabaska country; in 1783 he became a partner in the North West Co., but the murder of John Ross by some of his men in 1787 (the second with which he had been connected) caused his retirement, and in 1790 he sold his share to Wm. McGillivray. He returned to the U.S., and became a special Indian agent. He died in New England about 1807, poor and forgotten. His maps of the Northwest were among the first which exercised influence over future events. (from Wallace, Does. Rel. to North west. Co.) (blue index cards)

From the description of Peter Pond records, 1773-1775. (Detroit Public Library). WorldCat record id: 664683143
