Idwal Jones was born in 1890 in northern Wales. In 1902 his family moved to Pennsylvania. He began his career in journalism in 1915, writing for newspapers in San Francisco. In 1926 he published his first novel. He was an accomplished chef and was active in various food and wine societies. He continued to write numerous articles on California geology, folklore and viticulture, as well as incorporating those interests into his novels. He died in Laguna Beach, Calif., in 1964.
