Robert Gregory (1727-1810) was born in Ireland. He made his fortune as a merchant in India. In 1766 he settled in Kent, England and served as a member of the British Parliament (1768-1784). He also served as a director of the East India Company (1769-1782) and as chairman of the Court of Directors in 1782. He married Maria Auchmuty and they had three sons, Robert (1754-1814), Richard (1761-1839), and William (1766-1840), and one daughter, Margaret.
