Frank Leslie (1821-1880) was an American engraver, illustrator and publisher of family periodicals. Born Henry Carter in Ipswich, England, he had an early interest in engraving and printing and by age 20 was superintendent of engraving for the Illustrated London News . He came to the United States in 1848 and began publishing illustrated periodicals, including the well-known Frank Leslie's Illustrated Newspaper, which had a run of nearly seventy years (1855-1922).

Miriam Florence Folline, Leslie's second wife, was an American publisher, author, feminist and society woman. They married in 1873, his second marriage and her third. After Leslie's death she managed his publishing business, going so far as to have her name changed to "Frank Leslie" in 1881.
