Born in Chicago, IL, on May 27, 1859, Leander Hamilton McCormick was the youngest of four children of Leander James and Henrietta Hamilton McCormick, and a grandson of Robert Hall McCormick, inventor of the McCormick reaper. L. Hamilton McCormick was a noted inventor, author, sculptor, and art collector. He graduated from Amherst College in 1881, after which he studied law at Columbia University. In 1887 he married Constance Plummer, of Canterbury, England, with whom he had three sons. A prolific writer, McCormick wrote most often on philosophical and psychological topics as well as business topics. He pursued a life-long study of character analysis and phrenology, and published several writings on "Characterology". L. Hamilton McCormick passed away on February 2, 1934, in Miami, Florida.
