Harold N. (Norman) Moldenke (1909-1996) was a taxonomist and botanical educator. He was born at Watchung, N.J. He received his B.A. from Susquehanna University in 1929 and his M.A. and Ph. D. from Columbia University in 1934. His career at the New York Botanical Garden began in 1929 when he began a Research Fellowship. He was Assistant Curator (1932-1937), Associate Curator (1937-1948) and Curator and Administrator of the Herbarium (1949-1952). His fields were the Verbenaceae and Avicenniaceae and Eriocaulaceae. After resigning in 1952 he became Director of the Trailside Museum, Watchung Reservation, Mountainside, N.J. and Supervisor of Nature Activities for the Union County Park Commission. He taught courses at Newark State College (Keane State College) and Paterson State College (William Paterson College). He wrote "Plants of the Bible" with his wife, Alma L. Moldenke. His father was Charles E. Moldenke, the Egyptologist. His uncle was Richard Moldenke, the metalurgist. He died at Corvallis, Oregon in 1996.
