Archibald Stuart was born near Staunton, Va. in 1757. He was educated at the College of William and Mary and was a member of Phi Beta Kappa. He fought at Guilford Court House and in the Yorktown Campaign. Stuart studied law under Thomas Jefferson and served in the Virginia House of Delegates. He aligned with Madison and favored the ratification of the United States Constitution. He served in the Virginia Senate and was a judge of the Virginia General Court.
