Dirk Jan Struik, geboren in 1894, overleden in Belmont, Massachusetts in 2000, studeerde wis- en natuurkunde aan de Rijksuniversiteit Leiden; promoveerde in 1922 op een zuiver wiskundig onderwerp; als leerling van Paul Ehrenfest leerde hij Jan Burgers en Jan Tinbergen kennen, wilde evenals zij wiskunde en socialisme met elkaar verbinden en kwam ook in contact met Jan en Annie Romein; na periodes in Italië en Duitsland vertrok Struik in 1926 naar het Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in Boston; in 1936 was hij medeoprichter van het marxistisch georiënteerde 'Science & Society'; in 1951 werd Struik ten gevolge van de 'communistenjacht' onder McCarthy door het MIT met behoud van salaris op non-actief gesteld; vrienden en collega's, verenigd in het 'Struik Defence Committee' namen het voor hem op en, toen vier jaar later zijn onschuld werd vastgesteld, werd hij in zijn functie hersteld; in 1958 verscheen van zijn hand bij uitgeverij Pegasus 'Het land van Stevin en Huygens'; in 1960 ging Struik met pensioen, maar tot 1992 bleef hij met grote regelmaat publiceren.
