"Le carnaval" was called by the composer a "Grande sinfonie," but it is really a divertimento. First American performance 18 April, 1959, Columbia University Orchestra, Howard Shanet, conductor. In the last movement, "Kehraus," players are instructed to stop playing one by one (as in Haydn's "Farewell symphony"), and some violin parts indicate "some of the violins go to sleep."--Cf.
