John Evershed was a founding member of the British Astronomical Association and later Assistant Director of the Kodaikanal Observatory that now (1993) comes under the Indian Institute of Astrophysics. While at Kodaikanal he did some path-breaking work on the spectrum of sunspots and discovered the Evershed effect. He retired from the Kodaikanal Observatory in 1923.
