Annie Leland Barber was born June 9, 1861 to Henry H.Barber, a Unitarian minister, and Elisa H. Pratt Barber. She graduated in the first class of Radcliffe College (the Harvard Annex) in 1883 and subsequently taught school at the Parsons School in Greenfield, Mass. and Miss Brown's School in New York City. After her marriage to Ward R. Clarke in 1901, a Unitarian minister, she was active in woman's suffrage in New Hampshire and in the church.
