Irish statesman.

De Valera participated in revolutionary politics as a young man and after the Easter Rising became national president of Sinn Fein. In 1919 he became President of Ireland. At various intervals between 1932 and 1959 he was Prime Minister; he ended his public career by serving two terms as President.
