Landscape architect. Educated at Harvard College (A.B. 1882). Eliot was instrumental in the development of the Boston Metropolitan Park system. Later, his ideas set the pattern for most American metropolitan parks. In 1892, Eliot was hired as landscape architect by the new Metropolitan Park Commission, which he had been instrumental in creating. In following years, the state legislature established a permanent commission, and implemented Eliot's recommendations for the development of a regional open space system. Before his death in 1897, Eliot had completed plans for the Charles River Basin, which came into existence after the dam was built in 1910.
