John Higginson (1616-1708) was the son of noted clergyman, Francis Higginson (1586-1630), who brought his family from Claybrook, Leicestershire, England to New England in 1629. Although the younger Higginson seems never to have been ordained, he was appointed to several ministerial positions: Chaplain at Saybrook Fort, Conn., 1636-1639; Asst. Pastor and Pastor at Guilford, Conn., between 1643 and 1659; Pastor at Salem, 1660. His printed works include: Prefaces for Cotton Mather's _Winter Meditation_ (1693) and _The Everlasting Gospel_ (1700); _Our Dying Saviour's Legacy of Peace to His Discipline In a Troublesome World_ (Boston: Samuel Green, 1686); and others.
