Thomas Townshend, 1st Viscount of Sydney, British Whig statesman. Lord of the Treasury (1765), Speaker of the House of Commons (1766), and member of the Privy Council (1767), Secretary of State for Home Affairs, War, and the Colonies (1782). In the latter capacity he guided the negotiations for the Treaty of 1783 between Britain and the United States.
