Député du clergé aux états généraux de 1789, l’abbé Grégoire (1750-1831) contribua à l’union du bas-clergé et du tiers et proposa, le 4 août, l’abolition du droit d’aînesse. Il fut le premier à prêter le serment de fidélité à la Constitution civile du clergé (novembre 1790). Évêque constitutionnel de Blois (1791), il fut élu par son diocèse à la Convention où il contribua à faire voter les décrets accordant les droits civils et politiques aux juifs et l’abolition de l’esclavage. Membre du Conseil des Cinq-Cents (1795-1798) puis du Corps législatif (1800), sénateur (1802), il renonça à son évêché lors du Concordat. Sous la Restauration, il siégea dans l’opposition libérale comme député de l’Isère (1819).
