Richard Schultz Schweiker was born in Norristown, Pennsylvania, in 1926. After serving in the U.S. Navy from 1944 to 1946, he graduated Phi Beta Kappa from the Pennsylvania State College in 1950. Following a ten-year career in manufacturing and sales, Schweiker was elected as a Senator to the 87th Congress of the United States, serving from 1961 to 1981; in 1976 he was Ronald Reagan's vice-presidential running mate. He served as Secretary of Health and Human Services during the Reagan administration from 1981 to 1983. He was president of the American Council of Life Insurance from 1983 to 1994.

Richard Schultz Schweiker was born June 1, 1926 in Norristown, Pennsylvania. He served aboard an aircraft carrier in the U.S. Navy during World War II. Following his military service he attended the Pennsylvania State University where he received a bachelor's degree in 1950. He became president of the American Olean Tile Company. He was elected in 1960 to the U. S. House of Representatives from the 13th Congressional District in Pennsylvania. He served in the House of Representatives until 1968, when he won a seat in the U.S. Senate. He was re-elected to the Senate in 1974. He decided not to seek a third term as Senator in 1980. He was Ronald Reagan's designated vice-presidential running mate in the 1976 presidential election. He served as Secretary of Health and Human Services from January 22, 1981 to February 3, 1983. From 1983 to 1994, he served as President of the American Council of Life Insurance.
