John T. Stuart was the first law partner of Abraham Lincoln whom he met while they served in the Black Hawk War and served with in the state legislature, 1835-1836. Stuart also served in the U.S. Congress, beating Stephen A. Douglas in 1838. He was Chairman of the Lincoln Monument Association. His mother Hannah Todd Stuart was an aunt of Mary Todd Lincoln and Elizabeth Edwards, wife of Ninian W. Edwards. She was the cousin of Stephen T. Logan, whose daughter, Mary, married Milton Hay, uncle of John Hay, secretary to Lincoln. John T. Stuart married Mary Nash, the niece of Judge Samuel D. Lockwood. Their first child Betty attended Monticello Seminary in Godfrey, Ill. and married Christopher Columbus Brown, who entered practice with her father. Mary Logan's brother David settled in Oregon.
